Sisters, Sisters...There Were Never Such Devoted Sisters

They say blood is thicker than water. If there is a word that is stronger and more binding than blood then that word would describe my sister and I.

From day one I was her side-kick, a live doll she could take care of. She was my protector, becoming fierce when someone would dare to push me around. When I was sick she was my doting servant making sure I was comfortable, surrounding me with everything I may need. After a surgery if I wasn’t able to walk, she would piggy-back me throughout the house taking me wherever I needed to go.

When an opportunity came along that I never thought I’d be healthy enough to pursue, she was the first one to encourage me to go for it. She’s the person I go to for advice and to talk me off a ledge when I become obsessed with my analytical fears and insecurities. She praises my writing and speaking abilities and gives me the confidence to keep pursuing the calling God has given me. Many times she has given me words of affirmation at the exact time I have needed to hear them. I crave her acceptance and approval more than anyone else. There is no one who has a bigger or more compassionate heart than her.

Five years ago God moved my sister to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. A year after she moved to Tennessee, she had the opportunity to move home, but couldn’t receive peace to move back to Ohio, even though many thought she should. She did her best seeking God’s best for her even though it was a painful season. For a few years she searched for a church she could be fed at and longed for lasting friendships that had depth, but she clung to the promise God gave her in Ephesians 3:20, that God would go exceedingly abundantly beyond for her.

And He did.

She goes to a church where she is fed each week and is able to serve in the youth ministry. She gained wonderful and deep friendships who go the extra mile for her, holding her arms up and she can depend on them. And she just bought her first home and my family, her friends, and  I will gather together to move her in next weekend. She followed the path of God’s peace and now she’s seeing the benefits of walking by faith and not by sight. To say I’m proud of her is an understatement and I’m excited to see what God will do through her because of her servant's heart.

People may ask how the hearts of two sisters who are so different in looks and personalities be so connected? The secret is simple really. The devotion and bond we have is strong. We’re each other’s biggest supporters and cheerleaders. We hold each other’s arms up when hard times come and we’re the first to celebrate each other’s victories.

We aren’t just sisters…we’re best friends.
